Unbeatable breakfasts in Rochester, MN

Rise, shine, and dine at three of Rochester, MN's favorite restaurants. Canadian Honker, Five West, and Rooster's Barn & Grill serve up some of the best breakfasts around, so set your alarm.

CANADIAN HONKER

It's been 31 years since Joe Powers opened the Canadian Honker in the front parlor of a Rochester residence. Back then, the parlor-turned-restaurant accommodated 40 guests.

Today, the Canadian Honker is a bustling and welcoming restaurant across from Saint Marys Hospital that seats up to 200 patrons.

According to Powers, the Canadian Honker does not buy pre-made food. Prep cooks are present seven days a week and prepare all of the food from scratch. "It's not the easiest way but it's definitely the right way," he says.

Breakfast standouts include award-winning Eggs Benedict prepared three ways--salmon, meat lovers or traditional honey-baked ham. If you want to rise and shine with the "whole enchilada" in every bite, the Breakfast Burrito combines scrambled eggs, cheddar and mozzarella, bacon, sausage and ham in a flour tortilla.

And if you have room for a sweet treat after your meal, sample or take home a piece of the Honker's famous Bunnie's Coconut Cake, named after Bunnie Powers, Joe's mom, who created the recipe. "It's without a doubt what we are famous for," says Powers. "Having sold well over one million pieces, we have actually shipped the cake all over the United States."

The eatery features outdoor seating, a full-service bar, live entertainment, clothing and merchandise, and free parking. The friendly staff is the key to the Honker's success, says Powers. "Our employees without a doubt set us apart. They all have a strong work ethic and genuinely care about our customers."

FIVE WEST

Constructed with a classy, modern design, Five West was a vibrant addtion to Rochester's dining scene when it opened in 2015, and its inventive cuisine and welcoming ambiance have quickly established it as one of Rochester's most popular restaurants.

Located on Commerce Drive, at the corner of 19th Street Northwest and West Circle Drive, Five West serves breakfast daily starting at 7 a.m. "We have some amazing breakfast items," says Jon Buck, manager. Can't-miss selections include the S'more Waffle, a Belgian waffle with toasted marshmallow, chocolate syrup and graham cracker sprinkle, and the Strawberry Banana French Toast, which is stuffed with fruit and topped with powdered sugar.

With plenty of tables and a row of cushy booths anchored in the middle of the restaurant, Five West has a living room-like atmosphere and invites guests to come as they are. Buck says the staff will treat guests like family.

"They care so much about Five West and absolutely love our customers. It's really refreshing to have a team who cares equally about each and every customer that walks through the door."

Five West's patio overlooks a small pond, and it's a perfect place to greet the day. "We all know that Minnesota summers are short-lived," says Buck. "We wanted to give Rochester one of the best patios in town, to ensure folks get to enjoy their summers with us in comfort and style."

ROOSTER'S BARN & GRILL

The original Rooster's Barn & Grill on West Circle Drive has given way to Rooster's Too, which hatched in 2016 in the Shoppes on Maine.

Both restaurants offer full homemade-to-order breakfasts seven days a week. "Rule the Roost Breakfast" menu items include Hen on a Hay Stack--eggs scrambled with onions, peppers and mushrooms nestled over hashbrowns and topped with cheddar jack cheese, and The Recoop--eggs, cheese and sausage over two biscuit halves with hash browns, all covered with homemade country gravy.

"We provide low prices, huge menus, and an environment that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age," says co-owner Ross Manahan. "Come out and see us at the new Rooster's Too; you'll love it!"
